A half-day Disability Awareness Seminar was held on Monday 9 March 2009 in the NICVA Building, 61 Duncairn Gardens, Belfast BT15 2GB
Seminar Outline:
EFDNI’s Disability Awareness Seminar is suitable for all levels of staff, whether frontline, supervisory or managerial.
It covers the key areas of disability and addresses issues in relation to both employment and customer services. It has an informal format and practical focus with an emphasis on delegate participation. Delegates described this seminar as enjoyable, practical and informative, building their confidence when interacting with people with disabilities.
Seminar structure:
- Disability Discrimination Act and case law – brief overview of legislation followed by case studies exercise using DDA cases
- Language etiquette exercise
- Disability awareness training videos – two videos will be used, the “Talk” video to highlight general disability issues and the “Enabled” video to focus on learning, physical and hearing disability.
- Overview of five key disability areas – this provides information on the nature and extent of disability in five key areas - hearing, visual, learning, physical and hidden (including mental health) disability.
