The Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID) has published the findings of a UK-wide survey which highlights the difficulties people with hearing impairments experience in the workplace.  This was reported in the June 2006 issue of Equal Opportunities Review (Number 153).

The key findings were:

• 70% of those surveyed said that their hearing impairment had prevented them from getting employment
• 25% stated that employers had raised the issue of their hearing impairment during their employment interview
• 53% reported that the "attitude of employers" was a barrier to getting a job and to progressing when in employment
• 34% believed that their job did not fully make use of their qualifications
• 57% felt that their colleagues had some degree of deaf awareness, however, more than half still felt isolated at work
• 25% felt that no workplace adjustments had been made to accommodate their disability
• 26% reported having been harassed in employment because of their hearing impairment.

It is essential that all employers are aware of these disturbing statistics and, importantly, that they take action to ensure that they improve employment opportunities for people with hearing disabilities.  All employers should implement measures to make sure that deaf employees are supported in work, that they feel included and do not experience harassment.
