Health Matters (Health & Safety) Ltd Newry and Dublin was represented at the seminar by their Managing Director, Mary Doran. Mary is a Nurse by profession and Health & Safety Trainer/Advisor and she has been involved for many years in carrying our research and teaching healthcare professionals and other disciplines on the safer handling of service users. Mary gave a short demonstration how in an emergency staff may assist wheelchair users to move from their wheelchairs into an Evac Chair with minimal risk of injury to both the handler and the person being assisted. Balancing the rights and choices of the individuals and responding in an emergency in the safest manner was reinforced throughout as she demonstrated one possible strategy of the manoeuvre whilst applying the principles of safer handling.
